Duane McDowell has been an avid naturalist and plant lover for as long as he can remember. His first job was working in a cut-flower chrysanthemum range in the Cleveland suburbs in the 1970s. After a customer at Lyndale Garden Center asked him about orchids in 1983, Duane read Rebecca Northen’s “Home Orchid Growing” and was immediately hooked. From 1986-96, Duane worked for Orchids Limited, Inverness Greenery, and Arnold J. Klehm Growers. Hybrids that he made have won numerous AOS awards, including flower quality awards, an Award of Quality, and an Award of Distinction. Duane enjoys visiting growers and photographing plants and flowers. He spent two weeks at Ecuagenera’s nurseries in Guayaquil and Gualaceo in 2011, taking photos of more than 2,000 plants during his visit. Currently, Duane grows about fifty Neofinetias, four Paphiopedilums, and a smattering of other orchids under lights in his basement in Roseville. He decided to focus on Neofinetias “because they are easy to grow successfully with the level of neglect that I offer. I am a busy guy with five grandchildren and a hectic work travel schedule. I don’t have time to grow anything fussy!” He is the author of The Orchid Picture Book (1996).
